Comparison Review: ASUS GL553VE vs. MSI GP62MVR

Comparison Review: ASUS GL553VE vs. MSI GP62MVR - Hey guys, today I’ll be comparing two gaming laptops at the same price point: Rp. 20,000,000. On one side, we have the ASUS ROG GL553VE, and on the other, the MSI GP62MVR. Both are recent models with similar specs but different strengths. Let’s see which one is right for you.

ASUS vs MSI

Core Performance

  • Processor: Both laptops are powered by the same Intel Core i7-7700HQ.
  • Motherboard: ASUS uses the HM175 chipset, while MSI uses the HM170. While HM170 was originally designed for 6th-gen (Skylake), it supports 7th-gen (Kaby Lake) through BIOS updates.
  • RAM: Both come with 16GB DDR4 (2 slots, upgradable to 32GB).

Storage

  • ASUS: Features a fast 256GB Samsung M.2 SSD plus a 1TB HDD.
  • MSI: Comes with a 128GB Toshiba M.2 SSD and a 1TB HDD. ASUS offers double the SSD capacity out of the box.

Graphics (VGA Card)

This is where the biggest difference lies:

  • ASUS ROG GL553VE: Features a GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB VRAM.
  • MSI GP62MVR: Features a GTX 1060 with 3GB VRAM. Although MSI has less VRAM (3GB vs 4GB), the GTX 1060 is a significantly more powerful GPU than the 1050 Ti. Both are VR-ready. Note that laptop GPUs are generally slower than their desktop counterparts due to power and cooling limitations.

Battery and Web Cam

  • Battery: ASUS has a 4-cell battery, while MSI has a 6-cell. Both can last several hours depending on usage.
  • Web Cam: Both feature 720p HD cameras at 30fps.

Additional Features

  • DVD Drive: ASUS includes an internal DVD drive, which is useful for physical media or older installers. MSI lacks an internal drive, prioritizing a thinner build.
  • Audio: Both support 7.1 surround sound. MSI uses Nahimic, while ASUS uses Sound Blaster.
  • Networking: Both have Gigabit LAN. MSI adds a Killer LAN booster for optimized gaming traffic.
  • Keyboard: ASUS features RGB lighting (customizable zones). MSI has a white backlight only. However, MSI uses a SteelSeries keyboard with a shorter 1.9mm travel, while ASUS uses its own “chiclet” design with 2.5mm travel. MSI also includes a dedicated fan-boost button.
  • Display: Both have 15.6-inch Full HD displays with 178-degree wide viewing angles.
  • Cooling: MSI uses a dual-fan system (one for CPU, one for GPU) with separate exhausts, which generally runs cooler. ASUS uses a single-fan solution for both.

Conclusion

MSI provides a superior GPU (GTX 1060) and better cooling, but ASUS offers a larger SSD and RGB keyboard customization. Both include Windows 10 Pro and a starter kit (bag, box). The choice depends on whether you prioritize raw gaming power (MSI) or storage and aesthetics (ASUS).

Happy gaming!
